About Los Angeles
| Los Angeles is unique. There is no other city quite like it. It
has an area of about 1,215 sq km and a population of more than 9.9
million. Surrounded by mountains and the Pacific Ocean, this sprawling
metropolis has a wonderful blend of mystique and chaos, movie stars
and everyday Jo Soaps, music, culture and of course food. Unlike
many other cities, LA lacks a hub or core and this means that every
area and neighbourhood is different to the last one. It is like a
constant journey of discovery, full of excitement, beaches, mountains,
theme parks, desert and celebrities. What many people don’t realize is that when referring to LA, it is really LA County, which is an amalgamation of 88 different cities, of which L.A. itself, is only a small but very significant part. It is so significant, that there are more artists, writers, film-makers, actors, dancers and musicians working and living here, than in any other city on the planet. L.A. is often largely associated with Hollywood and celebrities. Although this part of the city does play an important part, and has more recently been completely revitalized and rejuvenated, thus regaining its status and appeal, L.A. has much more to offer besides. From the busy beaches to downtown, the whole city is fizzing with renewal projects. Another shopping and entertainment complex in the Grove at Farmer’s Market has just been completed. The magnificent Staples centre which opened in 1999 is still one of the biggest entertainment and event venues in the world. The stadium of the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Kings also holds lots of major music events. The fantastic Watts Towers of Simon Rodia State Historic Park has been restored to its former glory. Venice boardwalk has also been turned into a little gem. Top class museums litter the city, covering every area of history, culture and artistic expression. There is literally so much to do and see, so many places to eat and shop, and so much L.A. vibe to savour, that everyone deserves a taste of this unique city at some stage in their lives. |
